Sampoor Handed Over To India
It has been confirmed that more than 2000 acres from ‘High Security Zone’ at Sampoor have been handed over to India with complete autonomy states ‘Lanka’ midweek newspaper. According to ‘Lanka’ a soldier of SL Navy had died in the area and Mutur Magistrate had not been allowed in the zone to conduct the magisterial inquest to the incident. The Minister of Justice had to mediate in getting permission for the inquest to be conducted states ‘Lanka.’
Only Indian workers with the security of the Navy are employed for projects in the zone. Earlier ‘Lanka Irida’ had reported that lands of more than 1200 farmer families were handed over to an Indian company to build Sampoor power house without paying any compensation for the land owners. These families still live in refugee camps.
Also, a special zone has been assigned for laying of high-tension cables from the power house and a very small amount as compensation is to be paid for the lands taken over for this purpose state sources at Trincomalee District Secretariat. According to these sources only Rs.700 would be paid as compensation for removing a coconut tree.
